Building a REST API
Going from the principles to a service that exists. Validating input before it reaches your logic, shaping errors a client can act on, paginating, versioning, and writing it down so somebody else can use it.
Written in house, from the work rather than from a syllabus. Every example is one we would use ourselves, and every quiz question explains why its answer is right.
What you’ll learn
- Design routes around resources rather than actions
- Validate and coerce input at the boundary, before any logic runs
- Return errors in a consistent shape a client can branch on
- Paginate a collection in a way that survives inserts
- Version an API, and tell a breaking change from an additive one
- Generate documentation from the code so it cannot drift
Before you start
- · Backend Foundations, or familiarity with REST and status codes
- · Python or another server language
