Cleaning and Shaping Data in Excel
The half of spreadsheet work nobody demonstrates: names with invisible spaces, dates that are really text, one column that should be two. Find what is wrong with a sheet, and fix it with formulas rather than by hand.
Written in house, from the work rather than from a syllabus. Every example is one we would use ourselves, and every exercise is checked against the same engine that grades your answer.
What you’ll learn
- Find the invisible difference between two values that look identical
- Normalise case and spacing without retyping anything
- Split one column into several, and join several into one
- Recognise a number or a date that Excel is storing as text, and convert it
- Do arithmetic with dates, including month ends and working days
- Decide when a helper column is clearer than a longer formula
Before you start
- · Excel Foundations, or comfort writing formulas with cell references
- · Knowing what a range is and what a dollar sign does
